A lot of House of the Dragon fans were breathing a sigh of relief when one of their least-liked characters failed to make an appearance in the latest episode.
House of the Dragon fans have named Ser Criston Cole their most hated character of the Game of Thrones prequel and were relieved he didn’t show up in episode seven.
In the latest installment of HBO’s hit fantasy drama, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) continues her effort to recruit illegitimate Targaryens from the smallfolk to command the house’s dragons.
Meanwhile, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) is pressured by Oscar Tully (Archie Barnes) to execute Ser Willem Blackwood (Jack Parry-Jones).
At the same time, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) seeks purpose after Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) removes her from the Small Council.
At the end of the episode, Ulf (Tom Bennett), who has long claimed Targaryen heritage, successfully manages to command the dragon Silverwing.
He immediately flies his powerful mount over King’s Landing and is pursued by Aemond, who makes a hasty retreat after spotting Rhaenyra with Silverwing and two other dragons.
Although there were no jaw-dropping twists this week, fans are on the edge of their seats in anticipation of House of the Dragon’s season finale, which could set the stage for an epic war in Westeros.
However, a number of the millions of fans who tuned in couldn’t help getting some digs in at Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel), who failed to make an appearance after several bad decisions this season.
“No Criston Cole for a whole episode. Hugh and Ulf are now dragon riders for the good guys. Daemon talked to people. New Lord Tully. Ended with this scene. Quality episode,” one X (formerly Twitter) user penned.
“I was trying to figure out why I had a pleasant experience watching the latest HOTD episode and it wasn’t until 40 mins after finishing it that I realized I didn’t have to see Criston Cole,” another said.
They then joked: “Fabien on most other occasions I would like to witness a beautiful man with brown eyes but not in this case.”
A third said: “People saying this was the worst hotd season 2 episode?? what the hell are you talking about guys, we didn’t see criston cole’s annoying a** even once.”
A fourth quipped: “hotd ep 7 was a solid 10/10 wowowow see how great an episode can be when criston cole isn’t in it.”
And another wrote: “best episode of hotd yet bc no criston cole bless.”
Criston has received considerable backlash this season for sabotaging his relationship with Alicent with some baffling decisions, including refusing to support her for a position on the Small Council.
Moreover, he has generally been impulsive and reckless, making thoughtless and often violent decisions that only serve to put the Targaryens more at risk during the ongoing war with Rhaenyra.
Will he turn things around in the finale, or could the second season of House of the Dragon conclude with the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard finally getting some comeuppance?
House Of The Dragon is available to watch on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK and HBO and MAX in the US.
