Eamonn Holmes reportedly sent a reassuring text message to his estranged wife Ruth Langsford after rumours swirled he was engaged to his new “girlfriend”.
Eamonn Holmes reportedly sent Ruth Langsford a secret message after speculation swirled that he was engaged to his rumoured girlfriend, Katie Alexander.
Some thought the GB News presenter, 64, had popped the question to Katie, 42, when she was spotted wearing a diamond ring near his home over the weekend.
Friends of Eamonn have now denied that they are engaged, but claimed the rumoured couple are “in it for the long haul”.
After the proposal story made headlines, Eamonn is said to have reached out to Ruth to reassure her that the claims were false.
A source told MailOnline: “There are other people in this and I know Eamonn had to message Ruth to say there was nothing in the engagement speculation.”
They added that Katie is eager to make the supposed relationship public, but Eamonn wants to keep it private to respect Ruth.
The source said: “Katie just wants to get it over and done with but Eamonn is less keen because he doesn’t want to hurt Ruth’s feelings.”
It is thought that Eamonn has had a friendship with the divorced counsellor for several years, taking her to a safari park, a Manchester United game and a Beyonce concert in the past.
The former This Morning hosts confirmed they were in the process of divorcing in May.
A joint statement from a spokesperson said: “Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes have confirmed their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing.”
It was later claimed that they had been living separate lives for two years.
A source told The Sun: “Eamonn and Ruth’s relationship changed when they left This Morning. They started moving in different directions in their careers and their priorities started to change.
“Eamonn was desperate to return to Belfast, which he thinks of as home, but Ruth would never move. It became a bone of contention.
“As her ITV career continued, Eamonn went down another path and they became ships in the night. For the past two years they had led separate lives, professionally and personally.”
Despite separating, it was said that Ruth had continued to nurse Eamonn through his health battles.
Speaking in June, Eamonn shared his desire to remain on good terms with Ruth. He told The Mirror: “It’s too early to say but I hope we can still be friends.”
Both Eamonn and Ruth have continued to wear their wedding bands.
They married in 2010 after beginning their relationship in 1997. They share one son, Jack, who turned 22 this year.
